Texts in Progress

Tortoise is the first recorded Tiefo narrative from the village Gnanfongo, Burkina Faso.  A generation of Tiefo speakers refused to transmit their language to their children, and one of the major losses is a complete lack of children’s tales.  One evening on the chief’s roof, a group of children pleaded with one of the five remaining grandparents to translate a Jula tale into Tiefo so they could hear the language in narrative form.  This is the complete transcription of the text, recorded with my iPhone since the Marantz was inconveniently located at the time, interlinearized with SIL FieldWorks, and then run through XLingPaper to pdf using XeLaTeX. It takes a village!
